Drop Test

IEC 60068 Standard

IEC 60068 is one of the standard series on environmental testing issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission. The IEC 60068 standard series provides a series of environmental test methods for electronic and electrical products to evaluate their performance and reliability under various environmental conditions. The IEC 60068 standard series consists of multiple parts, each part covering different environmental test methods and parameters. The main topic of this section is drop testing.

01 IEC 60068-2-32

This test is divided into two procedures. The first simulates falls which a specimen, normally in the unpacked state, could undergo during handling and is normally restricted to two falls from a prescribed attitude onto a specified surface from a specified height.

The second procedure simulates repeated falls which may occur to such devices as connectors or small remote control units which are normally attached to cables during use. Repeated falls onto a specified surface from a specified height are achieved by using a suitable apparatus, e.g. a tumbling (rotating) barrel.

Free Fall

When releasing the test specimen, the applied disturbance should be minimized to allow it to fall freely from suspension.

The free-fall height should use one of the following values (* denotes recommended values): *25mm, 50mm, *100mm, 250mm, *500mm, *1000mm. Higher drop heights are not suitable for large specimens.

The drop surface should be flat, hard, and rigid, such as concrete or iron plate.

Free Fall——Repeated

Each test specimen should be tested individually. Typically, a cable connects the specimen, and it is subjected to multiple free drops from a fixed height according to relevant standards. The results of the test can be assessed based on the mechanical and electrical changes in the specimen.

The number of drops is determined by relevant standards, or the following values may be used: 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000. Unless otherwise specified, the connecting cable length should be at least 100mm.

The drop height is 500mm, and the rate of falls shall be approximately ten falls per minute. The specimen shall fall on a smooth, hard, rigid surface of steel of 3 mm thickness, backed by hardwood of approximately 10 mm thickness.

02 Drop Test System

KRD40 series zero-distance drop tester mainly simulates the resistance to drop and impact of large and heavy packaging products. It can realize the drop test of the edge, surface and angle of the sample. This equipment is mainly used to evaluate the ability of product or packaging to withstand drops during transportation and loading and unloading, so as to improve product and packaging design.
